I’ve been browsing Pinterest and brainstorming how I can update our front door and entryway. We have a maroon front door and shutters. It isn’t the worst color in the world but just isn’t my style. I want something a little more modern and neutral.
I try to take walks with my son every day so I’m always looking at the colors of the houses in our neighborhood trying to picture what would look good for our house.
As I’m neighborhood stalking and Pinterest scrolling, I’ve seen this layered doormat and rug combo idea that I just love! I would have never thought to layer a rug underneath my doormat but what a fun way to jazz up your entryway! Being the frugal person that I am, I thought it would be fun to come up with modern doormat and rug combos under $40!
And let me tell you, this was actually harder to do that I thought becaaaaaause outdoor rugs are pricey my friend. In order for the rugs to hold up to various weather conditions, I recommend going with a rug designed for outdoors or indoor/outdoor.
Once you narrow that down, things can get dicey but never fear…I’ve found some perfect modern doormat and rug combos under $40, and I think you will love these!
My recommendations for sizes are layering an 18 x 30 inch doormat on top of a 2 x 3 foot (or 24 x 36 inches) rug. The doormat will sit perfectly on top of the rug so you see just enough of the rug pattern sticking out around all four sides. I think this combo fits well in front of a standard size door.
Of course if you have double front doors or want a bigger doormat, adjust accordingly 🙂

Most of these combos are around the $35 range with the exception of #2 and #7 which are a little more than that. My personal fave combo is #1! I already have that doormat and I think I’m going with the black buffalo plaid rug underneath.
I’m going to paint our shutters and front door black which will give the house a more modern and updated vibe. I will post before and after pictures when everything is done!

Hi Shannon, I feel your pain! I had (and still have) every intention of painting my front door and shutters black. I just don’t love the maroon look so I’m hoping to update this summer. I went with combo #1 knowing I will be painting. I will do a dedicated before and after blog post once the project is finished. If you want to keep with maroon, I suggest keeping things neutral so combo #2 or #7 could look great and won’t clash. You can spruce it up with some green and white floral arrangements!
