Best Summer Toys And Gear For A One Year Old

Now that my son is walking, we’re pretty much in full on toddler mode these days. He is busy, busy, busy all day and loves to explore and discover anything and everything. I’ve been looking forward to this summer because I knew he would be at such a fun and playful age. His newfound freedom has brought on newfound toys and gear. I thought it would be fun to write a dedicated post about the best summer toys and gear for a one year old!

Last summer, we were still in the newborn stage so I wasn’t spending much time outside. Now all he wants to do is go outside and explore. Even though he is mobile, he is still unsteady and learning so trying to find toys and gear to suit his interests / development but also his safety was very important to me. I want to give him the freedom to discover within a safe environment so he is less prone to falling, accidents, slipping, etc. I think this is the anthem for all moms with a one year old! It’s the age of cautious freedom.

The items I have chosen have been a hit for us! They are great for development so my one year old can experience new things and exercise new senses and motor skills. They are all very practical too which I’m all about! So let’s jump into the best summer toys and gear for a one year old.

// Water Table
My little guy has so much fun at this water table! Any toy where he can stand and play is all the rage for him these days. It’s the perfect height and I love the extra bells and whistles on it. Your little one will get enjoyment out of this for many summers. Toys that grow and transition with a developing baby or toddler are the best.

// Indoor / Outdoor Slide
Slides are another big hit in our house. We got this slide for his 1st birthday and have used it both indoors and outdoors. It’s not too tall or big for him right now and as he gets older, he can learn to climb the ladder.

// Stroller & Trike Combo
We just got this and I’m obsessed! Another toy that will transition with him for years to come. I love to take walks with him in our jogging stroller. But lately getting him to go longer than 15 minutes has been a challenge (unless I bring about 50 snacks) because he doesn’t like to sit and be confined. But with this trike, we can explore the neighborhood and he likes to “ride” 🙂 It’s another great item that will last for many summers and additional kids!

// Crawling Tunnel
Similar to slides, tunnels are another big hit! My son loves crawling back and forth and stopping to sit in the middle of them ha 🙂 It’s cute until you realize you have to crawl in to get him out and then get stuck yourself…don’t ask! Anywho, I love this indoor/ outdoor tent and tunnel set! It’s a great way to keep all the balls confined (as much as possible at least because we all know they will still end up everywhere). The tent is always great at providing shade outside while he plays. You will love watching your little one go in and out all day long!

// Portable Booster Seat
A portable booster seat is SO handy not just in the summer but really any time of year. We go to the park at least once a week and I love taking our lunch so we can have a picnic. Having a  booster seat and tray for my little guy to eat at makes it so much more enjoyable and less messy. Great for travel, little trips, or just your own backyard!

// Bubbles
There is pretty much nothing more fascinating to a 1 year old than bubbles! My son sees them and runs right for them. It’s the simple things 🙂 Any shape, form or gadget that will produce bubbles will be a hit all summer.

// Baby Pool Float & Canopy
Of course summer will most likely include trips to the pool or beach. This float and canopy is a must have! Your one year old can float and be shaded will you guide them around the pool and let them explore the water. And you don’t have to hold them in the pool the whole time either.

// Inflatable Pool
And if they want a pool of their own, then look no further! This one isn’t too deep and also has a shade. I keep mentioning shades because they are just really important and necessary with a little one. Baby/toddler skin is so sensitive. Even with sunscreen, some built-in shade is always a bonus! Whether you opt for this inflatable pool or just buy a plastic kiddie pool, your little one will love splashing and playing in the water.

Do you have a favorite item that I didn’t include in my best summer toys and gear for a one year old roundup? If so, I would love to hear about what you’ve loved so leave me a comment to let me know!
